Naval Science Instructors

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Joseph Kostelnik

Chief Warrant Officer Kostelnik is a native of Corpus Christi, Texas. He enlisted in the Navy in 1973 and served for 24 years in the Navy's Submarine force, earning a naval commission through the LDO/Chief Warrant Officer program.

Mr. Kostelnik retired in 1997 and spent 18 years in Real Estate Sales and Marketing before joining the NCHS faculty in October of 2012. He is beginning his fourth year as the Senior Naval Science Instructor.

Mr. Kostelnik is a graduate of Valdosta University in Valdosta, GA, and he recently completed his requirements in the Master of Arts in Teaching, Secondary Education (Social Studies) program at the Citadel Graduate College.  He has been married for 34 years to the former Theresa Pace of Charleston, SC. They have two children and reside in West Ashley.

Master Sergeant Russell

Master Sergeant (USMC Retired) Eric A. Russell is a native of Miami, Florida.  He entered the Marine Corps Reserve in August of 1979 as a Heavy Operator and retired from active duty in May 2006.  With over 26 years of service, some of his highlighted duty assignments were;

Drill Instructor at Marine Recruit Depot San Diego, California

Founder of the First International Young Marines Program – in Okinawa, Japan (Youth character development program)

University of Mississippi, Assistant Marine Officer Instructor

Sergeant Instructor and Platoon Sergeant at Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Virginia

Faculty Advisor, Academics Chief, Operations Chief, and Deputy Director of the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy in Okinawa, Japan (Leadership development for Sergeants through Gunnery Sergeants)

Upon retiring from active duty, MSgt Russell became a Marine Instructor in the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) Instructor at Glynn Academy in Brunswick, Georgia from 2006-2007.  After a successful tour of the assignment, MSgt Russell returned to Park University to complete a bachelor’s degree in Management/Human Resources.  Returning back to the MCJROTC Program in 2013, MSgt Russell was selected as a Marine Instructor for the Energized for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Academy, Inc. in Houston, Texas.  In July 2014, MSgt Russell transitioned to become a Naval Science Instructor, Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC), North Charleston High School. 

MSgt Russell is married to the former Gloria Jean Shotwell.  They have three sons; Eric II – active duty Sergeant First Class (US Army), Derrick – active duty Staff Sergeant (US Army), and Travis – Store Manager.

Personal Decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars, and the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
